Pillar 1

Voice AI agents for business

The voice agent is the entry point into this whole space: an AI that understands a caller's request over the phone, responds to it, and acts (books, transfers, takes payment). This pillar covers how it works, what it really costs, and where it's actually useful today.

A voice AI agent combines three technical layers: speech-to-text, a reasoning/decision engine (usually an LLM today), and text-to-speech that replies to the caller. Perceived quality depends as much on the latency between these three steps as on how relevant the answers are.

Unlike a traditional IVR, which forces callers through a fixed menu ("press 1 for..."), a voice AI agent lets callers speak freely and adapts its response. That's more comfortable for the caller, but harder to design and test properly.

Pricing varies enormously depending on call volume, integration depth (telephony, CRM, back-office systems) and vendor — this is one of the areas where vendor marketing is vaguest, and one we prioritize documenting honestly.
